Biodiversity Basics

This site will introduce you to some of the major groups of animals and plants found in the world.

Diversity of life is a result of millions of years of evolution acting on populations of organisms. Over time some populations change so much that they become unique species, different than other populations they once resembled.

Currently there are 1.8 million different species that have been named and described. This number is continually increasing as scientists discover new species throughout the world. These organisms are classified into groups by similarities.

In lab you have already observed organisms in the Domains Archaea and Bacteria and in the Domain Eukaryota, Kingdoms Protista and Fungi. Below are links that will lead you on a webquest to discover the charateristic and evolutionary trends found in the Kingdoms Plantae and Animalia.

For each Kingdom follow the links, read the material and observe the specimens presented on the web pages. Fill out the handout from blackboard.

Domain Eukarya

Kingdom Protista

Kingdom Fungi
